There’s a new doctor in Hyderabad and he goes by the name, Dr Bubbles Chai Specialist

The all-new Dr Bubbles Chai Specialist is making a splash with its Taiwan-inspired chilled beverage, Bubble Tea and much more (think waffles and yoghurt shakes).

For a city that loves chai, it's a wonder why we haven’t yet embraced Taiwan’s popular bubble tea. The chilled beverage, popular in the streets of Taiwan, is a tea-based drink mixed with flavoured-syrups and fruit jellies or tapioca balls. A fairly new concept in Hyderabad, there have been attempts at popularising the drink but none was successful. The all-new Dr Bubbles Chai Specialist, which opened in the city a few weeks ago, aims to do just that.

On entering the outlet, we are ushered in by a woman in a white lab coat, the “Chai Specialist”, who administers the drinks. Located in Banjara Hills, the 60-seater outlet has a basic décor with coffee-shop furniture, funny tea-related doodles and counter displaying the many coloured bubbles. The menu is simple, serving a variety of iced tea, tea shakes, yoghurt shakes and waffles. Although most of the drinks are fruit-based, there are options like hazelnut and butterscotch, for people who want to try something different. In no time, our drinks arrive. The Pink Guava with Kiwi Bubbles is an ideal summer quencher, with the sweetness of the two fruits being minimal. Explaining the process of making the drink, our Chai Specialist tells us that a choice of syrup (pink guava, here) and flavoured bubbles are added to a base of green tea. The frequent explosion of the bubbles in your mouth is rather enjoyable, although the result is a sugar rush. Among the other iced teas, we recommend Kaala Khatta with Blueberry Bubbles and Green Apple with Litchi Bubbles.

We also try the Falooda Yoghurt Shake with Cranberry Bubbles. The addition of yoghurt-based cream makes this one thicker than the other drinks. As we sip on it, we realise this one is a tad too sweet. On the recommendation of the Chai Specialist, we dig into the Tiramisu Waffle (vanilla waffle topped with whip cream and coffee maple syrup). The coffee flavour balances the sweetness of vanilla, making this one a hit.
