Wearing a sombrero on your head is definitely not a criterion to eat Mexican food at the newly opened Wrapchic in Chennai’s VR Mall. The UK-based Indian burrito chain has come to India for the first time, in Chennai, with a refreshing new take on Mexican cuisine with an Indian twist. The fusion evident in every bite of Kheema Nachos, Salsa Lazeez Burrito and even a Hyderabadi Chicken Rice Bowl, from their expansive menu.

The restaurant chain, founded by Birmingham-based Mahesh Raikar in 2012, is also present in Dubai, but the franchise is owned by first-generation Chennai-based entrepreneur Sanjana Konduru in a tie-up with Yellow Tie Hospitality. With a background in operations, logistics and supply chain management from the University of Manchester, the 23-year-old is relying on her hasty decision inspired from being a foodie to be able to serve ‘desi to desi’ in India.“While the menu in the UK is not as spicy as the Indian one, we have focused on Indian flavours through North Indian food, but there is a plan to introduce local Chennai flavours in the next few months,” Sanjana tells us.

Tikka in quesadillas
Incandescent bulbs shining through colourful red and yellow Mexican hats, the kiosk literally says hola with its bright interiors and a live counter. Diners can choose from burritos, nachos, tacos, quesadillas, rice bowls and even the innovative ‘wraposas’; unfortunately, they do not serve tostadas. We start with a large Chicken Tikka Masala Quesadilla — loaded with cheese and small chunks of chicken, it is packed with spicy masala and to pay tribute to the north Indian delicacy. There is a lot on offer for vegetarians and the Paneer Lababdar Wrap is definitely a must-try. The tortilla is wrapped with paneer masala, mint mayonnaise, jalapenos and spicy salsa cheese that lends it a tangy yet hot flavour.

Burritos are easily one of the most popular Mexican cuisine favourites, which is why we can’t help but get excited when the Cheesy Mexican Chicken Tikka is served to us. With a mix of tomato rice, refried beans sauce, chicken tikka masala, chipotle, salsa and mozzarella cheese, the filling in the whole wheat stuffed tortilla is easily much more than we expected.

Butter chicken nachos?
Diners could easily skip everything and grab a rice bowl with the likes of a Cottage Cheese Makhani or a Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani rice bowl or even the Peppery Red Jhinga and Prawn rice bowl. We, however, had our mouths watering and minds intrigued at the idea of butter chicken being served Mexican style. With a base of tangy tomato rice, rajma masala, chicken tikka and makhani gravy, the dish is topped with corn and salsa, bell peppers and spicy tandoori mayonnaise to easily make a no-brainer one-bowl meal for all those who find it hard to pick one dish.

Mexican food is not only about the savoury delights, as desserts make an equally important part with churros and cakes, among others. While Wrapchic does serve delicious churros in two varieties — Nutella and Dark Chocolate, and a big Nutella Quesadilla, which is hard to avoid for all those who are nuts about the hazelnut cocoa treat. An interesting Chocolate Chilly Ice cream is served to us as a mix of chocolate and sprinkles with an aftertaste of chilli, making us instantly happy.

Meal for two is Rs 500 + taxes.
