Traditional embroidery takes centre stage at Archana Nayak’s new boutique

Drawing on her Oriya roots, Archana Nayak has launched her collection at her new boutique Adore, with the spotlight on shisha (mirror) embroidery and embellishments. Having opened on July 23, the 700- square-foot store houses Archana’s Indo-Western collection of lehengas, gowns, tops, anarkalis, kurtas and skirts.

Wearing a cotton Kalamkari-inspired printed skirt and a black, raw silk crop-top with zari-embroidered florals, the 27-year-old designer shares that with no formal training in design, her desire to constantly create and the backing of her husband Karthickeyan Rajamani are the reasons why Adore came to exist. “I would cut my mom’s saris and makeclothes as a child, but nothing materialised until my husband got me to start designing,” she shares.

Drawing inspiration from Persian embroidery styles that feature ornamental florals, Archana’s collection reveals an inclination towards nature-inspired themes with embroidered ditsy florals, vines and block prints of geometric motifs. Adding that tying up with artisan clusters in Odisha is on the cards, Archana says, “I want to work extensively with Pipili chandua work and pattachitra paintings for future collections, so that I can help promote the crafts of my state.”

The collection, built of raw silk, taffeta, cotton and jute sourced from Surat and Mumbai, features a colour palette dominated by black, which is Archana’s favourite colour. Also expect to find bottle green, baby pink and chestnut brown, as well as traditional colours like crimson, saffron and gold.
