Now you don’t need to take a flight to Bangkok to learn Muay Thai from a local

Three months after the launch of The Slate, housing Chennai’s unarguably most happening watering hole at the moment, the space is starting up its much awaited martial arts sessions. But here’s the exciting part. Visitors can get a taste of the action even if they don’t sign up, as the boxing ring is smack in the centre of the hotel’s three dining spaces — a lounge bar, café and restaurant. Just get a table by the window for a seat that’s ringside. Well, almost.

Co-owner of the space Ajit Shetty, whom you might also know as the founder of at Score Health & Fitness Club, has brought down international master trainers Tanachoot Panayarsung (Lin) and Aphiwat Ketchat (Tom) to man the classes. He tells us, “Both these trainers are incidentally part of world champ Buakaw Banchamek’s fight team.” The trainers have been brought via Thailand brand Krukhom (masters of strength) that Ajit will operate in India with partners Deepraj G, Varun Ganesan and Jai Choudhary.

With ongoing complimentary trials for enthusiasts to test the waters before the classes officially begin later in the month, four batches of 15 participants each can sign up through the day. If you’re not sure what to expect, gear up for a round of warm up, punches, kicks and a generous load of core workout, which we’re told is great for strength and weight loss. With fight nights in the works, Ajit says that it will match the excitement of a cricket match with as many as 10 international fighters, referees and so forth. We say, ring that bell baby!

Cost: Rs 5,000 for 12 sessions. Trial classes available till August 20. Time: 7 am to 8 am, 8.15 am to 9.15 am, 5 pm to 6 pm & 6.15 am to 7.15 am. No age restrictions.
