Sunburn Fest Kochi has more to offer than music

The fete aims to bring shopping, music and food under one roof
Sunburn Fest Kochi has more to offer than music

Among all the entrepreneurial bustle, it is the women who seem to be finding their niche in keeping the city entertained with flea markets. Priyanka Robin—though a software engineer by profession—runs a creative centre for design studies called Times Academy for Interior & Fashion and is preparing to host the city’s upcoming open-air pop-up market under the banner.
“Our Academy had conducted a Xmas Expo last year and we learned that Kochi loves all kinds of fun and frolic. So we decided to combine music, food and of course, shopping at Sunburn Fest,” says Priyanka, when asked about the upcoming gala. We take a look at what she has planned for the two-day event.

 Shop local
The organiser is keen on two fronts when it comes to choice of vendors—promoting local and female entrepreneurs. Even while having as many as 28 brands present at the ground, almost all of them hail from the city. Names range from Thoppumpady-based apparel brand Silk Route to Vintage Hanger who specialise in handmade crafts. “Some of our vendors don’t have retail outlets yet and 99 per cent of the products featured are non-mass produced. We believe that they deserve the exposure,” says the 28-year-old. Also expect culinary aromas from the shacks of food outlets like Panampilly Nagar-based Donut Factory and Grills ‘n’ Bakes, who’re famous for their homemade burgers.

Colourful spirit
Being from a creative background, the young organiser wants to make space for art too. Besides vibrant decor, the fete will feature musical performers from various genres. Highlights among them include Thrissur-based rock and roll band Ugly Old Men and the city-based psychedelic project Mushroom Lake. “The culture and heritage of Goa and Kochi is very similar. Both the places have sun, sea and music! Through Sunburn Fest, we attempt to implement a miniature of Sunburn Goa,” states Priyanka. Looks like the city wants to party before the monsoon hits the coast.
