National Anthem not mandatory in cinema halls: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has accepted the center's suggestion that playing the National Anthem before screening movies should not be made compulsory.

The court modified its 2016 order and stated that the discretion on the National Anthem issue lies with the Central government. The court also added that if cinema halls play the national anthem, the audience except those who are differently abled must stand up.

"We are happy. Part of our demands have been met. We will give our suggestions to the panel," said Abinav Shrivastav, the lawyer for the petitioner.

The court, in October, had asked the Union home ministry to decide on the matter following a countrywide debate on the order that made the playing of the national anthem at movie halls mandatory.
