Summer camps to check out in Hyderabad
Summer camps are great places to test waters. These camps are where Olympian PV Sindhu, shuttler Saina Nehwal and international women’s doubles tennis star Sania Mirza realised their true calling, embraced their sport and went on to become world champs. The city boasts of some of the best sporting facilities in the country and here are the top five from the city that could interest your little one.
Sania Mirza Tennis Academy
Moinabad and Film Nagar
The Sania Mirza Tennis Academy has made it easier for aspiring
tennis champs this year by holding summer camps (general and tennis) closer home (not just at Moinabad on the city’s outskirts) at Film Nagar. None other than Mirza’s mom – Naseema and other trainers will teach the sport to the kids. Will the students get to meet Sania? Yes, when she visits the academy while in Hyderabad.
April 24 to May 27
Rs 8,000 (for integrated summer camp with art, music, dance) 9 am to 1 pm
Rs 5,000 (only tennis) for one hour.
Yama Skating Academy
West Marredpally and Kompally
If your child loves art and sports, training for artistic roller skating under the Yama brothers could be the ideal vocation this summer. Anup Kumar Yama and his brother Amar Nag Yama, who train the kids throughout the year, are now open for summer. For the uninitiated, Anup is a recipient of the Arjuna Award (2015) and has won over 100 gold medals in roller skating besides having trained Bollywood star Deepika Padukone for her 2010 movie Lafangay Parindey. “All that kids need to buy is an adjustable roller skate for `800 (available at the store) and they are good to go,” says Amar.

Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy
The very thought of training at the same academy as ‘Silver Girl’ and Olympian PV Sindhu is enough to get your child excited about signing up for badminton. Although Gopichand, one of the most loved gurus in sports, will train the kids only when he is in the city, his team of coaches put the children through a rigorous training and fitness regimen at their two facilities (both in Gachibowli) in nine courts. If you are lucky, you can even catch Sindhu training under the man behind the Academy.

The Yacht Club of Hyderabad
Boat Jetty at Sanjeevaiah Park
No one would say no to an evening outing to the Hussain Sagar Lake on the weekends. If it is to learn to manoeuvre your yacht to suit the city breeze, it is bound to be an exciting one. Yachting guru Suheim Sheikh, an IIT Chennai alumnus, left the corporate world to pursue sailing and wants to train the citizens in yachting, kayaking and wave boarding. The club also trains economically deprived children like 12-year-old Hyderabadi kid Leela Sagar who brought Telangana its first gold medal in Sub Junior National Yachting Championship in 2015. Only those above the age of eight can sign up for sailing.

While he hasn’t had girls in his football classes, he says he will be happy to have them. “If you are below 18, love to dribble, put on your shoes and join me,” he says.
