His love affair with the camera started when his best friend bought a DSLR and let him fiddle with it. And he was all of 16 years back then. “I started doing a lot of street photography to get a hang of the composition and other nuances,” recalls 19-year-old Meghdeep Sen, who, besides being a second-year student of English at New Alipore College, is a full-time fashion photographer. “This is all I know and this is all I ever wanted to be — a fashion photographer,” states the exuberant teenager very emphatically.

A self-taught shutterbug, Meghdeep’s graduation to fashion photography from street clicks took place when he started earning appreciation for the portraits that he clicked for friends and family. “This gradually earned me renown in the known circles, and I slowly started getting work. I initially shot a lot of good and upcoming Instagram models, which subsequently helped in getting further assignments,” says Meghdeep, who also does product shoots for local boutiques, and covers concerts of reputed music bands.

An avid basketball player, Meghdeep is very passionate about the subjects he clicks, and always tries to learn from his own work. He also loves the black-and-white format the most. “Nothing can be more elegant and classic than black-and-white shots, and if I had my way, I would have only pursued black-and-white photography,” says the ace lensman, who loves the works of Rafique Sayad and Shivaji Sen, among others.

Among the models whose pictures he has submitted for this column, he loved those of Pranomi and Sonia the most. “Pranomi has sharp features, and a dusky tone that comes out very well in both black-and-white and in colour palettes, and her looks are apt for high street fashion shoots. But she needs to pay attention to crazy poses more,” he says, adding that Sonia, being a fashion student herself, knows exactly what’s required for a shoot, and should do modelling more often. “Alisha has good height and great fashion sense, but she should increase her portfolio more, while Namrata has all the ingredients for a good model,” he adds.

Pranomi Banerjee | 19, height: 5 ft 5 inches

A second-year student of mass communication, Pranomi wants to pursue full-time modelling once she passes out. Mostly seen in jeans and oversized tees, Pranomi places comfort before style and is in complete love with the vintage and retro look of the ’80s and ’90s.

“I simply love the broad belts, huge sunglasses and bell-bottoms and love wearing them a lot. I like wearing colour blocks and stripes and black is my most favourite colour,” tells the pretty young thing, who has been modelling since the past one year.

Among ethnic wear, it’s always a sari with a backless and deep-cut blouse with oxidised earrings. “I love belts and oxidised earring and shoes, mostly sneakers and trainers,” tells Pranomi, who likes natural make-up when not working.

This first-year Masters student form Darjiling aspires to be a fashion blogger of repute. When it comes to personal style, Alisha likes to keep it, subtle, classy and elegant. "I like wearing pants with different kinds of coats both long and short. Besides, knee-length dresses with ruffled sleeves are my go-to thing during the day. If it's evening wear, then bodycon dresses in solid colours are what I prefer," tells the soft-spoken girl.

Not a big fan of prints, Alisha loves pastel colours including pink, peach, nudes and other light shades. "If it's a formal occasion, I like to wear saris and lehengas and traditional weaves like a Kanjivaram in bright shades is what I like to wear with a sleeveless deep-cut blouse," tells Alisha. Not a big fan of heavy make-up, she likes keeping her looks nude with just a hint of the base at times.

Namrata Ghosh | 19, height: 5 ft 7 inches

This second-year graduate student has been pursuing modelling passionately for about a year now, and is comfortable in basically any kind of clothing. “I prefer Western wear, especially one-piece dresses, off-shoulder ones and suit pants and jumpsuits. I love asymmetrical cuts and my favourite colours comprise pink, black and red,” tells the stunner.

When it comes to formal wear, it’s a lehenga or a floor-sweeping kurti with stone embellishments and embroidery work for her. “I really don’t know how to wear a sari properly, so I rarely wear them and prefer lehengas or kurtas. I like wearing finger rings and chandelier earrings especially in oxidised silver and matte gold, at times,” says the spunky model, who also loves to paint and dance.

A fresh postgraduate in fashion, Sonia gives a lot of importance to comfort rather than trends, when it comes to fashion. “Whatever I wear has to be comfortable first, and when it’s summer, I prefer dresses and winters for me always means jeans and tops. I also love wearing jumpsuits, and crop tops with high-waist shorts,” says the fashionista, who simply loves cotton, georgette, crepes and metallic shiny fabrics, among others.

Among colours, she prefers black, red and nude palettes, especially berry blush, though her colour choices vary with seasons. “I also love animal prints, and I have a cobra skin print and a leopard and tiger print, which I wear with dark-coloured denim. I simply drool over asymmetrical cuts with more detailing on one side,” says Sonia, who is not much of an accessories person. When it comes to make-up, it’s always foundation, blush, highlighter and lipsticks for her, says the avid traveller.
