A three-day-long fete of food turned into a nightmare as the final day resulted in a shooting. The event attracted thousands of garlic lovers from around the world as it was celebrating its 40th edition. Viral videos on social media sites showed people running for safety at the festival, as a gunman started shooting with a rifle. Visitors had initially thought it was fireworks that marked the final 30-minutes of the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
Reports say that at least 3 people have been killed and 11 have been seriously injured. Gilroy Police shared the following message online, “The hearts of Gilroy PD and entire community go out to the victims of today's shooting at the Garlic Festival. The scene is still active. If you are looking for a loved one, please go to the reunification centre at Gavilan College at parking lot B.”
Police have also confirmed that the gunman—who brought in the rifle through a fence during the band Tin Man’s performance—has also been shot and killed. The wounded from a shooting at a food festival in Northern California were taken to multiple hospitals and their conditions ranged from fair to critical.
