He wanted to pursue a Masters in Computer Application after completing his graduation and settle for a secured corporate job. But fate had other designs for him. At 31, Nirupam Dutta is happily creating a space for himself as a fashion and wedding photographer.

“Initially, it did hurt but now when I get to pursue something that I always loved and see my friends slogging like machines at the office, I feel relieved that MCA didn’t happen to me,” says the 31 years old soft-spoken shutterbug. It was his friends and family, who took notice of his skills in taking good pictures on a phone camera and goaded him to pursue photography professionally.

“In fact, my high school teacher lent me his Canon DSLR so that I could further hone my skills,” he recollects. To further learn the basic techniques and nuances of camera work, Nirupam joined the old and renowned Photographic Association of Dum Dum run by a very committed Benu Sen and his students before receiving national and international distinctions too.

“That course taught me how to wield a proper camera,” adds Nirupam, who has been doing fashion and wedding photography for the past five years now. To further learn the ropes of the trade, Nirupam diligently assists the seniors in his field, from whom he has learnt how important teamwork is, whether it’s a fashion or a wedding assignment.

“Also camera equipment can give you confidence but you have to have a basic sense of aesthetics to grow further,” tells Nirupam. The four pictures that are highlighted in this column had been taken by Nirupam while doing portfolio shoots. “Ipsita has a very expressive pair of eyes while Soumi’s biggest strength is her dazzling smile. Shreelagna has a very pleasant personality and camera-friendly features and being a model, she knows how to pose. For Sanchi, it’s her attitude that’s her asset and it comes out so well in all her pictures,” remarks Nirupam.

A busy executive producer at a film production house, Soumi, who used to do a lot of modelling a few years back, now poses for friends on request. And this picture happens to be from one such shoot for Nirupam on various moods of women. “I love the boho-chic look and I love wearing clothes in black, white and grey. Usually, it’s comfortable chic for me with harem pants, Karachi pants and high waist trousers and comfortable tees ruling my wardrobe. But if the occasion is a bit formal, then it’s cotton saris all the way. For parties, I prefer well-fitted short dresses in asymmetrical cuts. I usually avoid prints,” tells the very attractive Soumi.

A flight attendant by profession, Sanchi loves getting clicked when not flying. “I love wearing everything and I am very comfortable in my skin, which is most important. I like wearing both Western and Indian clothes and usually, it’s a jeans-Tshirt combination for me,” tells the sporty girl who also loves flaunting the smart floral printed tunics in white and blue.

“I love cotton since it suits the kind of weather we live in and traditional saris from my mother’s wardrobe are my saving grace for formal occasions. Since we are always in bright, colourful make-up due to our profession, I don’t like indulging in make-up much when left to myself,” she informs.
