Founder and Creative Director at 'Warp ‘n Weft', Sagrika Rai is on a mission to present the magnificent work of the master weavers and silk handloom craftsmen of Banaras to the world. Born and raised in Banaras, she was fascinated by the skillful artisans around her. As the Banarasi weave seemed to be on its last breath in 1997, 'Warp 'n Weft' was born to promote acceptance of the fabric as a quaint store at Marine Lines, Mumbai. Having personally worked with the weavers for over two decades mixing colours, designs, and palettes, she works to empower them by revisiting and redefining the Banarasi textile. Exhibited all around the world, Sagrika aims to educate her audiences about the nuances of handcrafted textiles from India. Warp ‘n Weft has also set up a Weavers’ Fund where they felicitate and encourage their older and younger talents with cash rewards and remain a source of support. Sagrika feels that she continues to be successful in spreading the eminence of heirloom across generations with her 23-year-old daughter Gaurika Rai joining hands in her mission.
