The art of Siddh: Fancy an aromasoul volcanic scrub?

The art of Siddh: Fancy an aromasoul volcanic scrub?

Many words have been written about ancient healing and tailored therapies; but an experience at Siddh Spa, Hyatt Regency Chennai, definitely warrants a re-telling of treatments that have stood the test of time.Upon entering an elegant reception area, complete with stunning artwork courtesy Banana Artworks — you’re greeted by stuccoed colonnades, marble floors and friendly smiles. Guests are guided to the relaxation area, provided with robes, slippers and offered a refreshing detoxifying drink of coconut and ginger. A pre-treatment steam and sauna is recommended, and it’s easy to lose a few hours (or a few days) here… soaking in bubbles, lounging in body wraps, unaware of the bustling city around you.

All the treatments are inspired by ancient Siddha practices, which are a part of traditional South Indian medicine. Guests can choose their path to wellness based on the elements of being — vatham (air and space), pitham (fire) or kapham (earth and water); which are the three doshas according to the Siddha Concept of medicine. Comfort Zone offers an extensive range of products, suitable for different skin types and they also focus on identifying the ideal home care solution for each skin type.

Take your time here. If you are visiting the spa for a treatment, you’ll also have access to the fitness centre and pool — which we highly recommend. There are comfortable loungers around the pool, which aren't usually occupied; so you can easily find one in the shade. The fitness centre is nicely done too, with plenty of daylight views of the hotel, as well as a lot of cardio and resistance equipment.

Contemporary elegance is the overriding aesthetic of Hyatt Regency and this carries through to the spa. All of the treatment rooms — including six spa suites, steam, sauna, whirlpool and jacuzzi areas; are decorated in natural, neutral colours. These are calm, soothing spaces in which both men and women would feel comfortable.

The relaxation room is brighter (with more views) which allows you to come to your senses post-treatment. However, where the spa really comes into its own is with the attention paid to detail — every corner has a delightful sight, and I particularly loved the gorgeous ceramic art installations in the area.
The spa has every service you could wish for or even think of; right from detailed health assessments to yoga classes. It’s a place with relaxing Buddha Bar music, electronic lockers, alongside a jewellery dish so you can leave those diamonds somewhere safe. The spa, an olfactory delight with fresh flowers at every turn, has a range of body wraps that sound tempting from their names alone: who wouldn’t wish for a “Sesame Suwasik” body therapy or desire an “Aromasoul Volcanic Scrub’?

Treatments can last anything between 45 to 180 minutes to offer city dwellers maximum relief in minimum time. The therapist was quick to make me feel at ease before checking my preferred massage oil and discussing problem areas.

The highlight of my trip was definitely a session of Aakara — which is a Marma point stimulation on the feet and hands, combined with a massage with gokura, triphala and sandalwood. The therapist’s wonderfully intuitive massage eased the tension gathered in my computer-hunched back, neck and shoulders. Needless to say, I was reluctant to leave the treatment couch. Their other signature therapies include Shila Abhyanga, a herbal poultice and an aromatherapy journey.

Take time recovering in the relaxation area; with herbal tea to sip, and a general sense of privacy as you skim through the pages of a glossy magazine or simply to come back to reality. The spa bug in me felt light, as if I were walking on a cloud! Siddh also offers ashtanga yoga and dhyana lessons, and Spa & Fitness Club membership. The membership is for a duration of 12 months.
