Pancake makeup was a solid form of foundation which was invented by Max Factor in the 1930s, especially for the tough environment of films. Films were shot using very strong incandescent lights, which made the actors' faces appear as if there was too much reflection.

The formulation was supplied as a dry, cake-like material packaged in a pan-like container. It typically needed activation with water and application using a moistened sponge. The outcome was a non-transparent, smooth, flat to semi-flat finish.

Its significance even reached the Indian film industry. At the height of the Indian film industry, imported stocks of the commodity were available in abundance at film studios like the famous Gemini Studios of Madras. Film set interiors relied extensively on the incandescent light bulbs that gave out a lot of heat.

That's why actors required heavy makeup that was resistant to those conditions, as well as making the actor less shiny on black-and-white film as well as the early stages of colour film. Pancake makeup was thus very useful in filming due to its usefulness in filming studios.

The dense formula of this cosmetic is responsible for its long-standing usage in theatre makeup, photography, and bridal makeup as well. The product provides a good matte finish and may be used for spot correction when dealing with pigmentation and uneven skin tone issues. It can help oily skin stay matte.

Yet, the pancake makeup can also have some drawbacks. Extremely dry or flaky skin will have more texture since the product will adhere to the areas of dry skin. Applying too much will make the face look dry, patchy, grey, and thick. Applying this around the eyes will cause creasing.

However, pancake makeup is no longer the first choice for modern brides. Wedding scenes are photographed and video recorded constantly, either in high definition or with flash. The cake-like quality of the makeup becomes visible when it is up close, and its composition could oxidize and turn grey.
