Moved by Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, the measure expresses “deepest respect” for the Indian diaspora and South Asian communities both locally and globally. Highlighting the inclusive spirit of the legislative action, the resolution states that the Assembly “recognizes this year’s Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and encourages Californians to take part in this joyous day of celebration.”

Celebrated across generations by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains, Diwali—or Deepavali—translates directly to “a row of lamps.” As one of the world's most enduring and cherished holidays, it serves as a moment of cultural appreciation, reflection and togetherness. Homes and public spaces are traditionally illuminated with candles, oil lanterns and glowing clay diyas, while night skies sparkle with festive fireworks to invite peace, health and prosperity.

Both Darshana and Ash highlighted the universal values embedded within the ancient festival, framing it as an opportunity for all communities to connect. The measure notes that the observance represents the ultimate triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, encouraging individuals toward "liberation from negativity, encouragement to overcome struggles, embracing positivity and humility and upholding kindness despite personal challenges."

Beyond the sensory joy of sweets, shared meals and radiant decorations, the legislative declaration frames the holiday as a catalyst for personal and community enrichment. “For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth and happiness; it is a time to reflect, signifying the importance of wisdom, kindness and transformation,” the resolution noted.

As California gears up for the festivities in November, the historic recognition invites people from every background to share in the warmth, illuminate their homes and celebrate mutual understanding across the state.
