In Rajasthan, Piplantri celebrates every girl’s birth by planting 111 saplings.

While girls are still treated as a second choice in some parts of rural India, Piplantri village in Rajasthan is changing the narrative, one daughter at a time. Every time a girl is born, the community celebrates her arrival by planting 111 saplings in her honour. The initiative, started by former village sarpanch Shyam Sunder Paliwal in 2007 after the loss of his daughter Kiran, has grown into a powerful community movement.
