The 2018 FIFA World Cup has got off to a good start and every national team is under pressure to perform their best at the international stage. Songs are always known to lift spirits of players on the field, and while Waka Waka and Wavin’ Flag have been immortalised, Shawn Mendes released a new version of his very own popular song for Portugal.
Shawn Mendes is Canadian but his roots lie in Portugal as his father is Portuguese because of which the singer-songwriter decided to release a soulful new version of In My Blood. The song has Portuguese lyrics and intends to inspire players as well as fans throughout the country. Interestingly, it is also the first time that the singer has actually sung in Portuguese, honouring his cultural heritage. The lyrics translate to “I will believe! That we are going to make it, that we are going to conquer,” and “We are Portugal. A single voice and heart!”
The song which was at number 11 on the Billboard Top 100 list earlier this year, was selected by the Portugal Football Federation and fans all over are thrilled with the new song. Interestingly, Mendes is supporting two teams in the World Cup - Portugal and England (his mother is English). However, the singer is more inclined towards Portugal and his favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo.
