We tried everything: German DJ Stella Bossi’s Mumbai concert stopped mid-set over venue license

Berlin-based techno sensation Stella Bossi saw her high-octane Mumbai performance brought to an abrupt halt after state authorities stepped in over missing venue permissions. The German-Italian electronic music artist was roughly fifty minutes into her energetic set at the Lower Parel venue when officials intervened to stop the music, leaving disappointed attendees booing as the stage went silent.

Sharing footage of an official in uniform signalling her to cut the sound, Stella took to social media with a tongue-in-cheek reaction. “POV: You’re 50 minutes into your set in Mumbai and the police finally found the OFF button. Sorry guys, we tried everything. Coming back soon,” she wrote. While concertgoers initially assumed local police were responsible, authorities clarified that the intervention was executed by the Maharashtra State Excise Department, whose khaki uniforms led to public confusion.

The regulatory intervention followed a sudden change in event logistics. Organisers had originally planned to host the concert at the Cruise Terminal in Ballard Estate. After failing to secure permission at the waterfront location, they relocated the gig to the popular Lower Parel nightlife hub without obtaining the mandatory one-day club permit required for large ticketed gatherings.

Explaining the rationale behind the enforcement, senior excise officer Sudhir Pokale noted that standard permit-room licences cover smaller gatherings, whereas large-scale ticketed events require rigorous safety assessments. “After the venue for this event was changed, the organisers did not have the one-day club licence required to meet area-safety specifications, emergency-exit, fire-safety and other safety requirements for the party. After receiving the information, we went to the event and found it packed with people at around 8 pm. We stopped the party,” Sudhir explained, confirming that action would be initiated against the organisers.

Known for her infectious stage presence and independent label, Stella reassured disappointed fans that she plans to return soon, while the incident highlights the strict regulatory compliance required across India's evolving live entertainment circuit.
