Hyderabad’s comic scene has been growing steadily, especially in the last two years with an increasing number of open mics and workshops as well. Apart from regular visits by international and Indian comedians, it’s no wonder that the city has had many home-bred artistes. Bringing them together, Utsav Dixit and Akshay Sharma started Deccan Comedy (DC) — a club that organises stand-up events every week in different venues across the city. “A few shows after we started, we got requests from cafés and restopubs to collaborate. Our belief that there is an audience here that enjoys comedy was reassured,” he says.

It all began when Utsav started attending gigs in San Francisco when he was there for a decade. He visited many clubs and enjoyed the shows so much that it inspired him to walk on to the stage and try his hand at comedy. “I loved performing, but I also had a day job. So, I wanted to shift back to India and shuffle between the two,” he adds. After coming back to his hometown, he was rather surprised that there were performers, audience and venues but no premium club experience. That’s when the duo started DC to create a comedy culture where people spend their weekends at a comedy show like they would listen to bands or watch a film.

In the last few weeks, DC has hosted about 20 shows featuring 30 comedians from Hyderabad and the rest of India as well. That apart, Utsav says that the focus is to encourage more comediennes as well. “The city currently has no more than three popular ones like Pensy Antall and Rupali Tyagi. We are trying to create a safe and comfortable environment,” he adds.

Ending the year on a high note, DC has two big Christmas special shows planned. The club is also bringing Amazon Prime’s Comicstaan winner Nishant Suri to town with his new show.
