With his distinct looks and acting style, he has been cast in a variety of roles —  from a henchman to an assassin. Before starting his directorial career, the Mumbai-based actor and writer, assisted master filmmaker Satyajit Ray and gave us Bollywood hits like Jawani Diwani, Safar, Jaani Dushman and Shahenshah.

Tell us a little about your acting journey so far..
I  have always loved acting. As long as I got to act, the role didn’t matter. Pushpak was special because I did it for my brother-in-law Jalal. He wasn’t in a situation to pay his actors then. That film never released, but the entire film industry got to see it at trial shows. The casting for Pushpak wasn’t final and they were in a dilemma of who to cast. Finally, Sarika, Kamal’s wife showed them a photograph of me. That’s how it all began.

Your father stayed in Chennai and you have a connection with the city.
We had a beautiful piece of land there. My father wanted to build a restaurant and make me run it. I did a course at a catering institute, but my mind was never in it. One day, my school principal called my dad and told him not to waste his money on me. That’s when I sat down with my father to discuss films.

We hear you were a Casanova who had a lot of girlfriends and a convertible.
(Laughs) People who meet me remember me as the guy with the green convertible and hanging out with girls. One day, I was driving down Marine Drive with three girls and a red jaguar zoomed past me! It was Amitabh Bachchan. Good times!

How did you know your wife, Shahnaz Vahanvaty, was the one?
I was very friendly with Shahnaz’s brother Jalal from school and we played cricket. Much later when I came to Bombay, we met at a party and there he introduced me to his three sisters. I got friendly with Shahnaz and we became quite attached to each other. The whole family was against it but Jalal fought for us. And I stood my ground because I had made up my mind.

What’s next?
When something excites me beyond words, then I will. Until then I am not taking anything. I’ll tell you what I really want to do. I want to make a short film.
