'The day music died': Tributes to Khayyam pour in from Zakir Hussain, other B-Town celebs

When creator of some of the most memorable compositions, National award-winner Khayyam's death broke on Monday night, a string of celebrities, including Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan were left shocked.

The Bollywood music composer whose real name was Mohammed Zahir Hashmi passed away at the age of 92, late on Monday at a private hospital here following a brief illness, an aide said. 

Survived by his singer wife Jagjit Kaur, Khayyam is known for his classics Kabhie Kabhie from movie by the same name, In Ankhon ki Masti from Umrao Jaan, Aap ki mehki hui zulfon from Trishul, Ae dil-e-nadan from Razia Sultan among many many others. 

He also composed music for Meena Kumari's album, I Write, I Recite featuring her singing her own poetic compositions.

Hansal Mehta: An entire era was blessed with music from Madan Mohan, SD Burman, Naushad, Khayyam, RD Burman and Kalyanji Anandji aided by singers at their peak and some great poetry. What we have is mostly mediocrity and noise with only a few exceptions. Sound rules over melody and poetry.

Adnan Sami: I'm extremely saddened to learn of the demise of our Legendary Music Composer Khayyam Sahib. He is credited with some of the most iconic film sound tracks. Umrao Jaan, Kabhi Kabhi, Razia Sultana to name a few. God bless his soul.
