KM Chaitanya is known for his diverse work as a feature film director, television producer and theatre director. Now, the filmmaker is experimenting with 30-second films. It doesn’t come as a surprise for those who have followed his work. However, what’s interesting is h ow Chaitanya is using a new app — a social mobile content platform called Firework — to release his films.

The three films titled Sleep, Genes and Stuck, explore human emotions and relationships in a matter of 30 seconds. Sleep looks at the relationship between an aging mother and her son, Genes tries to understand the complexities of an illegitimate relationship, and Stuck is about emotions that are trapped within the mind. Chaitanya, who is known for his feature films, says he was quite interested to experiment with this new format. “I was fascinated with the app and its features. I couldn’t make a video more than 30 seconds because the app wouldn’t allow it. But telling a fictional story in 30 seconds was a daunting task. However, it was great exercise for me as a filmmaker,” says Chaitanya.

Known for his award-winning feature films such as Aa Dinagalu, Aatagara, Amma I Love You and numerous television series, the director has never stuck to a particular genre. Whether it is an action flick or an emotional drama, Chaitanya has made films with his distinct style. These short films too reflect the his approach to the craft. What’s different though is the sense of time. “A feature film, is made in such a way that the audience doesn’t realise they have seen a two-hour movie. With these shorts, the challenge was to do the opposite. I wanted the audience to feel that they have watched a film that’s much longer than 30 seconds.

I wanted to stretch the moment, and it was a huge challenge to capture human emotions within the limited time frame,” explains Chaitanya who wrote, shot and edited these films in a matter of 15 days. The filmmaker’s next big release is Aadya, featuring Chiranjeevi Sarja, Shr uthi Hariharan and Sangeetha Bhat.
