Diane Keaton's signature turtlenecks, wide-brimmed hats, and impeccably layered outfits was unanimously considered iconic. Some even believe that the 'coastal grandma' aesthetic was inspired by Diane's wardrobe.

Keaton died on October 11 at 79, which prompted an outpouring of grief throughout the industry. Fans still remain curious about Diane's incomparable style, about what led her to zero in on her unique fashion sense. However, her wardrobe may been determined by her health struggles.

Why did Diane Keaton only wear hats and turtlenecks?

Diane said once that her signature style is made up of "a turtleneck, suit, large belt and, of course, a hat and glasses!"

"Some things will never change for me," Diane said in an interview, while talking about her personal style. In a May 2019 interview Diane revealed that she had dealt with “many skin cancers” over the years, which is why she relied on hats for sun protection. Her trademark high-neck sweaters served the same purpose, as she noted that she considered them “protective” as well.

In another interview with a beauty and wellness portal, she opened up further about the impact skin cancer had on her life. "Wear sunscreen. You've got to put it on," the actor said. She also explained that after being diagnosed with "serious" squamous cell carcinoma, she always carried around factor 50 SPF.

"I had it for a very, very long time [before it was diagnosed]. I knew something was up, but no one could find it," she added of the skin cancer. "I had three biopsies before they found it. And it was deep. A squamous cell cancer is second to melanoma, and you can die from it because it will spread. It's really not a joke."

"You've got to put the sunblock on, you've got to go to the dermatologist, you have to take care of yourself and pay attention," she urged.

Diane faced skin cancer twice, first at just 21 and then again many years later. Even so, she acknowledged that she didn’t take proper precautions when she was young. “Back in my 20s, I didn't pay attention much," she tsaid once. "I didn't research and didn't really care, and that was stupid because it's dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn't start sun care until my 40s."

Her official cause of death has not been disclosed. A family spokesperson, who confirmed the news asked for privacy as her loved ones grieve.
