Woody Allen is reportedly struggling to cope with the death of his former girlfriend, Diane Keaton.
Keaton passed away in California at 79, and the 89-year-old filmmaker is said to be “distraught” over her passing, according to People.
“He is extremely distraught and surprised and upset,” a source told the outlet.
“It makes him think of his own mortality,” the source continued.
Keaton's health is said to have deteriorated rapidly and unexpectedly in the months before her death on Saturday. However, the source noted that Allen had not been aware of her health problems. “He was surprised,” the source added.
Allen and Keaton began dating in 1969 after she appeared in his Broadway play Play It Again, Sam. Though their romance lasted only a few years, the two went on to collaborate on several films, including the 1977 classic Annie Hall, which earned Keaton an Academy Award for Best Actress.
In 2018, Keaton publicly supported Allen after he faced allegations of child molestation from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, whom he shared with his ex-girlfriend, Mia Farrow.
“Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him,” Keaton wrote on X. “It might be of interest to take a look at the 60 Minute interview from 1992 and see what you think.”
Keaton also continued to be friends with Allen after the director had an affair with Mia’s adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, which ended his relationship with Mia. Allen and Previn eventually got married in 1997.
“She didn’t believe that any problems [involving the allegations against Allen] overshadowed the important work that he did and the work they did together,” the source told the magazine. “So she always stood by him. He was always grateful for that. So he always felt close.”
