Watch: A tribute celebrating 25 years of Malayalam classic Manichitratazhu
One of those movies that redefined Malayalam cinema was Manichitrathazhu. This 1993 Fazil directed movie will always be remembered for being the all-time blockbuster that evolved into a Malayalam cult classic. Both commercially and critically succesfully, today more than two decades later, continues to retain its magic with cinephiles. Nobody can forget Shobna in the iconic role of Ganga Nagulan who also plays Nagavalli, or the hair-raising way she said "Vidamaate?". The part suspense, part psychological thriller became a foundation for most Malayalam cinema lovers. What's more, the comedy was unparalleled in this movie thanks to Innocent and KPS Lalitha.
On the occasion of its 25th year, a Chennai-based production company released a tribute to the movie. Ashish Abraham of Abraham's Creations says that the 25th year of the movie was a perfect opportunity to do something special and revive old memories that the movie had created. "These are memories created not just for the Indian cinema, but also for those who saw the adapted version in various languages."
The collab features popular musician Sanjeev T and Gowry Lekshmi. "This collab happened by luck as a matter of fact. Sanjeev was in Chennai for a show and he had a few hours hours to spare and i called up Gowry and asked if she wanted to do something interesting." Ashish has been a fan of both these artists and wanted to bring together Gowry's beautiful voice and Sanjeev's expert guitar skills through the video.
Why Manichitratazhu we ask Ashish? "25 years back this movie had taken a completely off beat topic with regards to mental well-being. This movie is still evergreen no matter how number of times its aired on TV! It is also movie that is close to a lot of people's hearts, and the stellar performances by all the actors and the entire team that put it together."
