It was a night of unexpected twists and turns. The 91st Academy Awards or the Oscars 2019 night was sort of predictable, and yet threw surprises with its list of winners.
Rami Malek as expected, won the Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, while Olivia Colman won the Best Actress for The Favourite. "I may not have been the obvious choice, but I guess it worked out," said Rami, about his win and he even drew parallels between his and Freddie Mercury's life experiences.
The biggest surprise, however, of the evening was the Best Picture award that was given to the Green Book. Best Director was won by Alfonso Cuarón for his film Roma.
Alfonso thanked the Oscars, "For recognising a film centred around an indigenous woman... As artists, our job is to look where others don't." While Rami encouraged people to listen to their inner voices, "To anyone trying to discover their voice, listen – we made a film about a gay man and an immigrant who lived his life unapologetically himself."
Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor for his role in the Green Book and Regina King won Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.
Meanwhile, one of the top favourites, A Star Is Born was recognised for its featured song, Shallow. Lady Gaga was awarded Music (Original Song) Award for this track.
