The trailer of Mission Mangal starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Sharman Joshi, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menen released today afternoon. Loosely based on the story of scientists at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) who contributed to the Mars Orbiter Mission, the film led by Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan is a science-meets-drama story.

It begins with Rakesh Dhawan (played by Akshay Kumar) asserting that there can be no science without experiments and the rest of the almost three-minute-long trailer features a group of women battling all odds to fulfil India’s ambitious Mission to Mars. What’s interesting to note is that none of these women dresses how one would imagine ‘a scientist working on the space programme’ but are regular saree-clad everyday women who have a lot of domestic responsibilities to fulfil in their personal lives.

The trailer is also full of unexpected nuances and moments. For instance, one scene shows Akshay Kumar suggesting that his team wants to go to mars using a home science technique and presents it with frying puris, another shows Sharman Joshi worried about ‘mangal grah’ in his kundli.

Directed by Jagan Shakti, the film also presents a host of difficulties, including limited finance, relevant experience and lack of support from the seniors in the organisation. However, undeterred by any of these, the team comprising largely of female scientists dedicate themselves to the mission.

Releasing next month on August 15, the film is certain to evoke patriotic feelings. It will also be facing a clash with John Abraham starrer Batla House and Prabhas’ Saaho.
