Designer Sharbari Dutta launches new womenswear collection with her brand Shunyaa
Shunyaa, the eight-month-old brand formed by renowned designer Sharbari Dutta -- known nationally for her ornate wedding kurtas, worn by celebrities – and entrepreneur Reshmi Bagchi recently launched a wide range of women’s collection. A mix of ethnic, traditional and Indo-Western wear, the range boasts of an eclectic prêt collection be it saris, kurtis, dresses, boleros or gowns.
“For the past two and a half decades that I have been designing clothes for men, I got countless requests from women to design for them, too. I used to make bespoke clothing for a few women on request, but never started a full-fledged line of clothing for them. Hence I thought it’s high time I started a women’s range, which is affordable, stylish and unique all at the same time. I owe it to them for a long time now,” smiles the warm and affectionate Dutta.
The interiors of the ornate and lavish store reflects the baroque and rococo styles from European architecture, amalgamated and overlapped intelligently with designs from the Renaissance Bengal period, lending it a grand look.
The women’s collection also boasts of gorgeous lehengas made of rich Benarasi fabric and Bengal silk etched with intricate designs, each of which depicts Indian and Bengali art and culture. The semi-bridal ensemble in Benarasi and fine muslin is ornate with Dutta’s trademark kantha stitch work. “While the designs are more traditional, the silhouettes and embellishments have a contemporary and global touch, thereby making each piece very trendy,” adds Dutta.
Reshmi Bagchi feels that this is the best time to launch the women’s wear since Puja is just round the corner and everyone will want to put their best step forward. “Great care is taken while choosing the fabrics and designs. We don’t have any duplicates or a second piece and all the attires are unique. We have used a lot of bright and warm colours, but at the same time have kept in mind the needs of a working woman. These clothes are something that you can wear to work and head straight for an occasion from there,” says Bagchi.
There are anarkalis, cape dresses, kaftans, jumpsuits, half jackets and hot pants besides the long kurtis, and Dutta has experimented with a lot of fabrics including linen, silk, Benarasi, brocade, chanderi, tussar, among others.
The saris in pure cotton, linen and khadi are also a steal. The scarves, too, deserve a special mention – they are high on both comfort and design quotients.
Beside the women’s collection, it goes without saying, there are several options for men including various types of coats, sherwanis, angrakhas, achkans, bandhgalas and Nehru jackets. The kurtas for men tell the tales of Kolkata and its history, beautifully replicated in kantha work all over the apparels. What floors you are the options when it comes to dhotis. Besides the colourful ones, there are dhotis crystal and semi-precious stones embedded in them.
Indulge gives a thumbs up to the store for its variety and recommends it as a must-go place, especially for the expats, before the Pujas, to ensure you look fashionable yet rooted to tradition.
