Vedika M's latest capsule collection in Kolkata is fun and flirtatious
THE ABSTRACT IS couturier Vedika M Sonthalia’s inspiration. Coupled with an affluent command over block printing, the 31-year-old creates vibrant magic on the canvas of her flirty silhouettes.
Brush strokes and geometric patterns assemble on flowy and comfortable fabric for a fun edit that’s apt for brunch or beach wear. Expect separates, jump-suits, asymmetrical tops and gowns that slip easily into the dressy mode.
Though Vedika loves colours and her collection is replete with hues of yellow, orange, blue, green and more, her latest capsule is all about three shades — black, white and grey. “For a change, I wanted to experiment with the shades of black, white and grey, which are not in abundance in my label. This collection is easy-going and hassle-free with multipurpose style,” says Vedika who started her 800 sq ft store Vedika M in Loudon Street in 2016. A graduate from NAFA, Singapore, she has worked as a stylist in the country, grew up watching her mother’s brand Earthy Myths creating ensembles with earthy tones. “I had the required expertise and experience but I wanted to play with colours and hence you will notice that my collection exudes fun and flirty character,” avers Vedika.
The Black White and Grey capsule uses a mix of both structured as well as flowy fabrics. So while you will spot a breezy pristine white top in mulmul or a voluminous asymmetrical top with brush stroke prints in cotton, you will also find double georgette and pepper silk giving a distinct character to cowls and pleats in the evening gowns and long dresses. A bustier top with palazzo pants in pure Chanderi caught our eyes for its brush stroke prints. The monotone ensemble stood out for its flowy jacket. Vedika also uses godets and a particular black jumpsuit in double georgette with block printed godets on the legs had a jazz of drama. She toys with sleeves as well that add a unique design element to her collection. The flared, balloon and pleated sleeves, some with tie-up detailing, certainly give the ensembles an interesting edge. Her label retails in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Ahmedabad.
