This Bali-inspired collection had sustainable fabrics and subtle prints
If summer conjures up a picture of pristine waters, swaying palms, balmy breeze and endless pina coladas for you, then SAND by Shirin’s Island ’24 edit will definitely floor you. Inspired by the textures of sand and sea, this collection features subtle prints inspired by the tropics, with clothing handcrafted from natural raffia, and fresh blossoms embroidered on bold evening silhouettes. Boasting of versatile co-ords, dresses and jumpsuits in fresh hues of sunset, seafoam, lavender mist and stone, and ensembles for both women and men, this range also has a capsule of handcrafted, vegan footwear inspired by Island life, which are easy-breezy, and comfortable.
Since the edit is inspired by Bali’s beautiful coastline, Shirin has employed a blend of soft, fluid fabrics From double metallic sheen linen, melange linen to natural raffia, evoking a feeling of walking along the shore. Interestingly, Natural Raffia is a special edition natural fibre, obtained from the dried leaves of raffia palms native to Bali. It is soft in nature and commonly used in making baskets or hats. As a further step towards sustainability, SAND has worked with a cluster of women artisans, vocationally trained in raffia weaving by hand knotting strands of raffia to create bandeaus, jumpsuit and dresses.
Founder of the label and creative director Shirin Mann takes us through the edit.
What makes Island ’24 edit special?
Sustainability is at the core of the Island Collection, with fabrics sourced from plant-based materials and waste from natural sources like aloe vera, rose, lotus, and eucalyptus. The use of eco-friendly materials reflects our commitment to mindful fashion practices. The collection embraces versatile silhouettes that transition seamlessly from island to city life. Clean lines, relaxed cuts, and vintage-inspired details add an edge to resort wear. From breezy jumpsuits to chic mini dresses, each piece embodies the spirit of adventure and exploration.
How experimental have you gone with silhouettes on the island?
We have incorporated elements of asymmetry, cut-outs, and unconventional shapes to create a sense of modernity and sophistication. From bare back tops and tube tops to unique raffia bandeaus and relaxed jumpsuits, there’s a refreshing take on resort wear.
What's the label’s design philosophy?
SAND is a travel-inspired brand and embodies a larger idea of better living worldwide. The pieces can be carried in a traveller's bag from an island to the city, a ballroom to a bar. The newest collection is inspired by the slow living of an island, encapsulating both the inland, which operates like a city but with conscious choices, as well as the shoreline, which reminds us to slow down and find peace of mind.
Your next collection?
We have started working on our Autumn/Winter ’24-25 collection and experimenting with new ways of layering, as well as exploring new colour stories and tones. The idea is to always do something innovative, keeping in mind transitional silhouettes, cuts, and upcoming trends.
