If there were only two words to describe the labels that take rack space at Shahin Ansari’s store, Maalgaadi, they are classy and funky; an extension of the 26-year-old entrepreneur’s style, no doubt. Constantly abuzz with pop-ups and labels straight off the runway, the store at Besant Nagar is set to host its bi-annual showcase, The KaMAALGAAADi Trunk Show Version 3.0, starting today. “There has been a visible change in the style aesthetics of the city. People are open to new styles and silhouettes, especially the men. Chennai loves bright prints and colours,” says Shahin, adding, “There’s no way you can go wrong with quirk.”
Cutting loose
Introducing Antar-Agni by Ujjawal Dubey’s SS’17 collection to the city, Shahin shares that the label’s unique drape style and relaxed silhouettes have found many takers. While the winner of the International Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week finds patronage among men and women alike, we are told, “Men love the funky take on Jodhpurs and the easy-to-wear style that Antar-Agni embodies.”
Following suit with the anti-fit trend are Kolkata-based designer Sanchita Julka’s creations that sport a degree of Indian character on western silhouettes. Look out for her sapphire-blue, plunge-neck wrap with tassels that can be paired either with cigarette pants or worn over an indigo maxi dress. For a more minimalistic look, E.Z.R.A’s SS’17 collection offers a mix of earthy, soft hues and delicate pastels in loosely draped atypical silhouettes, mostly in silks.
In the clear
On the accessories front, look for trinkets from Delhi-based label Ikroop — art.glass.jewellery, featuring earrings, cocktail rings, neckpieces and brooches made from two glass fusing techniques, and her latest all-clear glass line. We love the orbit ring from the Be Clear collection. Also on our radar is the handcrafted deep red leather bucket bag from the Ahmedabad-based brand Vitasta, a label which was selected for the FDCIxELLE First Cut designer’s show at the Amazon Fashion Week SS’16.
The two-day event at Maalgaadi will showcase 23 designers, including city-based labels such as Vivek Karunakaran and Splits by Anderson, across categories of men’s and women’s fashion and accessories.
Rs 2,000 onwards. At Maalgaadi. From 11 am. Details: 42103242
