Chaitanya Rao makes his debut at Mysore Fashion Week

Chennai-based fashion designer Chaitanya Rao will be showcasing his Autumn Winter minimalistic line at the three-day fashion show hosted by director and fashion designer Jayanti Ballal. Having designed for leading celebrity actors like Trisha, Tamannah and Asin, Chaitanya is currently working on costume designing for the Kollywood industry with Nayanthara for Imaika Nodigal and Fahadh Faasil for Velaikarran. He says, “I just wrapped up all my film projects and I am on a break. Mysore Fashion Week was a sudden plan and I am excited to work with a good line-up of models and choreographers.”

The collection includes leather garments and evening party gowns.” I do more Western wear, but people nowadays see more money in bridal,” says the 41-year-old designer. The garments come in lighter tones and pastels like green as well as metallic golds and black. The designer shares “I personally admire Alexander Mcqueen’s sense of styling, but he is no more. Again, there is Rohit Bal. His way of presenting are big and dramatic,” he says.

Starting his career 20 years back, the designer has come a long way in the film industry with his works in blockbusters like Thani Oruvan, Remo and Ghajini. He says that designing for models on a runway and costume designing in film industries are two different things. “The styling aspects like cuts, padding, and choice of colors are more glamorous in films. Secondly, designing for films is an ongoing process. We need to be ready with the garments as and when a new project comes up. Unlike fashion events where you get one or two months to plan in advance.” His last comprehensive line was showcased two years back at the Chennai Fashion Week. The designer has also worked with Bollywood celebs like Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. He is pepped-up for the upcoming Bridal Fashion Week in November in the city.

`30,000 onwards. The fourth edition of Croc Mysore Fashion Week will be held from September 15-17. Details: facebook.com/chaitanya.rao.10
