FLURYS, the iconic tea room on Park Street, branched out to South Kolkata last week. The landmark confectionery that is known for its rich, creamy pastries, puddings, cookies and a signature English breakfast, now has a compact menu at their 400 sq ft outlet at Lake View Road. After Bangur, Salt Lake and Chak Garia, this is their fourth outlet. “The idea is to bring the timeless experience of Flurys to this neighbourhood. The menu, though compact, is teamed with quality. Our loyalists don’t need to go to Park Street anymore for our signature delicacies,” avers Samit Ghosh, associate director of Flurys.

A standee with ‘All Day Breakfast’ written on it, in signature fluorescent pink, brought a wide grin to our faces. One of the walls of the 12-seater outlet is decorated with a collage of photographs, giving you a slice of history as you sip on the Arabica coffee and watch the traffic move lazily on the street outside. The popular English breakfast, comprising two rashers of crispy bacon, two grilled chicken sausages, an egg poach, a grilled tomato and a mashed potato patty with toast and butter by the side, was served at our table. We relished every bit of the English fare offered on a pristine white plate. We also sampled their soft and creamy chicken cheese sandwich with some flavoured chips, and loved it. You will also find omelettes with different selections and the usual hot and cold beverages on the menu.

Eclairs selection

Among the sinful delights, we opted for the Single Origin Dark Chocolate Craquelin Éclair, the choux-based pastry, among the eight variants on offer. The heavenly chocolate mousse sandwiched between the cookie dough made us crave for more. There are, in fact, two savoury eclairs as well that are exclusively available at the Park Street outlet. The éclair festival ends this month.

The sweet notes at Flurys are endless, including the droolworthy baba cake, almond cube, lemon tart and a host of desserts that coaxed us to indulge ourselves in some guilty pleasures. We tasted their newly launched fine, handcrafted chocolates — Mr and Mrs Flurys that offer a total of nine varieties and is divided into classic, fusion and vintage varieties. We tasted the Toasted Almond and Orange from the classic section that has a zesty kick of orange with almond and white chocolate. The entire selection is pure indulgence.
