With a knack for photography since childhood, photographer Sourodip Ghosh’s first professional brush with the camera happened in 2012 at the age of 18 when he got an assignment to cover political rallies from the Election Commission of India. A couple of assignments later, he discovered his love for portrait photography and took to full-fledged wedding photography since 2015. The 25-year-old finance graduate with a diploma in marketing believes that a photographer must develop a bonding with the subject he intends to capture. “A frozen moment will look alive only when the face is relaxed and expressive. I always make it a point to converse with my clients or models before I begin to shoot. It makes them comfortable and helps them give the best expressions,” says the shutterbug, who loves clicking portraits since they highlight various moods and emotions of a person apart from his or her best features. In these pictures of these four models that he shot recently for four different projects, he has tried to bring out the candid expressions and looks in each of them. Ghosh believes that Pallavi’s eyes, smile and jawlines are her strengths, and she needs to work a bit more on posing, while Riya’s eyes are her best features. “Tanika is a trained artiste, hence she is capable of changing like a chameleon in front of the lens and become a different person altogether. Whereas, Srija is very dedicated and passionate about modelling and survives on only watermelon for a week before the shoot,” he states. “All the shots were conceived and executed after thorough discussions and planning with all of them. I don’t believe that my models are mere subjects, their inputs too go a long way into doing a satisfying photoshoot,” feels the lensman, who loves gorging on biryani and travelling to mountains, when not working. An event management professional, who is aspiring to make a name as a model, Srija’s personal fashion style is classy and chic and she loves wearing dresses with floral patterns. “I rarely wear jeans. Instead, any nice dress in lycra in lighter shades of peach and pink works for me,” says the lanky lass. She also loves wearing saris, mainly chiffon. Here, she is wearing a peach dress, emulating the looks of Katrina Kaif. “I don’t have a conventional Bengali look and hence we tried this look,” informs Srija, who’s a watch hoarder and loves chunky earrings. “When it comes to make-up, I like it light with a hint of mascara and nude lips,” tells the pretty young thing, who loves painting portraits in charcoal or pastels on paper when not working.

Tanika is a theatre artiste, who is trying to gain a foothold in the acting industry. Tanika did a couple of shoots with Sourodip since she loves flooding her Instagram account with concept pictures. “For this picture, I was wearing a cropped winter jacket with a cotton mul sari and wore a pair of sneakers to make the sari a workable option,” says the spunky beauty, who loves to keep her looks casual. “I mostly wear jeans and yoga pants with different shorts and T-shirts because for me comfort is most important,” says Tanika, who loves to quirk up her looks by mismatching things. “At times I wear differently coloured socks or a stud in one ear and a dangler in another. I am a very much handloom person and like wearing organic and sustainable fabrics,” adds Tanika, who will also be seen in Aparna Sen’s upcoming movie, Ghare Baire Aaj.

Riya Deb Roy

A senior content producer at a film production house, Riya loves modelling whenever she manages to squeeze out some time out off her busy schedule. She had shot twice with Souradip to build her portfolio. For this, she is seen wearing an orange peach mul cotton sari with a white blouse and oxidised jewellery. Long dresses and ethnic kurtas comprise her personal sartorial choices, since Riya likes to keep it comfortable. “I love long dresses and kurtis in cotton since comfort is the key. I simply heart bags and oxidised or silver jewellery especially chunky and traditional earrings,” tells Riya, who simply loves wearing saris, mostly cotton ones. “I’m not a make-up person since I am prone to breakouts. But I love accentuating my eyes with dark kohl,” informs the bookworm, who loves to pore over mythological books written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni in her spare time.
