The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra is a high-altitude pilgrimage and trek in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the trek leads to a natural, 79-foot vertical rock monolith sitting at approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet), revered as a natural Shivling and believed to change color as sunlight shifts throughout the day.
The base for Kinnaur District, Himachal Pradesh will be near Reckong Peo / Kalpa and this trek requires strong physical fitness and acclimatisation. The trek distance is 32 km round trip and usually opens between late July and August. The local Kinnaur District Administration strictly controls Yatra entries via online and daily offline registration slots.
Day 1 will focus on Base Access and Camp. Reach Reckong Peo/Kalpa and drive to the trailhead at Tangling village. Ascend steeply through pine forests and alpine pastures to reach Ganesh Park campsite (3,450 m). On Day 2, begin the trek early (around 2 am–3 am) over steep boulder fields and moraines. Pass Parvati Kund to reach the base of the sacred Shivling. Pay respects and descend to Ganesh Park before high-altitude winds set in. Day 3 is when you descend back to Tangling village and head back to Reckong Peo.
A valid health fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner is mandatory to start the trek. Foreign travellers also require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) due to the proximity of the border area, obtainable at Reckong Peo. High-ankle waterproof trekking boots, heavy thermals, windproof layers, a headlamp and trekking poles are non-negotiable due to loose scree and freezing temperatures.
After the trek, one can head to Kalpa Village, just 14 km away from Reckong Peo for panoramic views of the Kinnaur Kailash range, apple orchards and Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery. Sangla Valley, 40 km from Reckong Peo, offers lush valley along the Baspa River, famous for trout fishing, apple orchards and Kamru Fort. Additionally, 7 km from Kalpa is a cliffside viewpoint dropping into the Sutlej gorge, leading to a traditional Kinnauri village with wooden homes.
