Andrew Garfield disclosed in a recent interview with Variety that he keeps a personal Instagram account and is equally addicted to it as everyone else. "I'm as addicted as anybody," Andrew admitted, adding that his screen time reports leave him uncomfortable with how much of his day disappears into the app.
Andrew didn't sugarcoat his frustration with the broader mechanics of social media, arguing that the platforms are engineered to exploit psychological vulnerabilities most people aren't equipped to resist. He called the underlying design "pretty dark" once you actually think it through.
As for what fills his feed, Andrew's answer was a fascination with offbeat pottery and artisans overseas, particularly craftspeople working in Japan.
It's not the first time Andrew has hinted at a secret digital life. Back in March, at the London premiere of his latest film, he told the Associated Press that he keeps what he called "creeper accounts," while stressing that staying off them takes real discipline.
Andrew is currently promoting The Magic Faraway Tree, a family adventure film based on Enid Blyton's classic book series, which follows a family that relocates to the countryside partly to escape a tech-saturated lifestyle. Despite the film's themes, Andrew noted that phones weren't banned from set — the goal, he said, was never to vilify technology outright, but to model a healthier relationship with it.
After a hard year of back-to-back films, he claimed that he frequently considered giving up acting entirely. Up next for Andrew is Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's biopic about the 2023 boardroom upheaval at OpenAI, in which he'll star alongside his real-life partner, actress Monica Barbaro. Monica recently praised Andrew's craft in a separate interview, calling him one of the strongest actors of their generation.
