Actress Richa Chadha is not one to sit idle. The actress, who has her roots in theatre, went back to performing on stage after a break of two years. The play, titled The Life in Telling, directed by Quasar Thakore Padamsee, also featured Vinay Pathak and Ashwin Mushran. Though it’s been a long gap, Richa once again proved why she is such a delight to watch on stage. The play ran to a full house. Since it was so successful, the brand that commissioned the play decided to adapt it for the screen.

“The response to it has been great. It was a good surprise when we were told that it would be made into a short film. And adding to that is the fact that it might just be the first of its kind. While watching a play has its own feel, as a short film, we will reach many more people. But of course, there are some changes made in the adaptation to suit the short film format,” says Richa.

The narrative is a collection of three stories about people in different stages of their life. “Someone is getting married, someone is having a baby, somebody is retiring. The film includes all of this,” says the actress. Though Richa is comfortable with both media, film and theatre, she still has a certain attachment to the stage, “As an actor, I feel the-atre is a purer form. You feel everything at that moment and closely influence the audience present. That’s what’s exciting,” she says.

Richa plays different chara-cters in each of these stories. Things people experience in their own life is what is captured in the 15-minute film. When asked how different it is to work in a short film, compared to a feature film, the actress says, “It’s still a lot of work! It’s a shorter time so you have to tell the story in that limited duration. But then, the story tends to be close to reality in a shorter format.”

Among other projects, Richa will be seen in the upcoming film Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai by Anubhav Sinha. “I had a blast. I worked with all the actors I respect. The cast is the strength of this film. It was great to work with veterans like Manoj Pahwa, Vinay Pathak, Kumud Mishra, and from the younger actors, it was fun working with Prateik Babbar,” says Richa, who has just wrapped up filming
for the movie.
