Irumudi, directed by Indian film director and screenwriter, Shiva Nirvana, is a Telugu-language action drama film. The film, starring Ravi Teja and Priya Bhavani Shankar in lead roles, released on August 21, 2026.

Irumudi follows the story of a father on a spiritual vow

Shiva Nirvana wrote and directed Irumudi, which was produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers. The film is about Trinath (played by Rabi Teja), an alcoholic father who leads a peaceful life with his wife (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and daughter, Manikanta (Baby Nakshatra).

The family lives beside a waterfall but when her daughter requests her, Trinath decides to take up the Ayyappa Deeksha that is a 41-day long spiritual vow or vratham that the followers of Lord Ayyappa observe.

Now that Trinath must follow the vow, he has to leave drinking which forces him to look inside himself, and face-to-face with his violent past. The thriller is set in a remote village in Andhra Pradesh and carries an important social message.

Is Irumudi about the Sabarimala temple?

Ayyappa Deeksha is an extremely strict spiritual vow that devotees must follow while preparing for the Sabarimala pilgrimage, an annual religious journey that leads to the Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple in Kerala, India. The temple, which has found itself amidst controversy for not allowing women who are of menstruating age to enter the temple, is dedicated to Lord Ayyappan.

The Deeksha forms an important backdrop of Irumudi, and many wondered if the film was about Sabarimala. However, Shiva Nirvana, clarified those doubts in an interview, "Nothing is related to Sabarimala. The 41-day Ayyappa Deeksha is a part of the hero’s life. During that period, Ayyappa devotees are very particular about their habits. I wanted to write a flawed character. If a drunkard guy has to take up this Deeksha, he has to stop drinking. That creates conflict. That’s why I took the Ayyappa Swamy backdrop. Nothing is related to Sabarimala or Ayyappa Swamy darshan".
