Every few months, the Dune fandom reopens the same argument: Paul gets the title, but did the desert pick the wrong Atreides? With another chapter of the saga coming to screens, the Alia Truther movement is louder than ever, and its case is more interesting than you'd expect.

Dune's biggest debate: Should Alia have been the chosen one?

The prophecy was always a hack. The Bene Gesserit's Missionaria Protectiva planted the off-world messiah legend among the Fremen generations ago as insurance for any sister who might get stranded on a hostile planet. It was a cover story that Jessica happened to need. So when Paul steps into the role, is he fulfilling a prophecy or exploiting a loophole? Alia's defenders say a manufactured prophecy can't be "fulfilled" so much as occupied, and Paul occupied it first.

Was Alia Atreides the messiah Paul wasn't?
What Alia's story reveals about the Bene Gesserit's failed plans

Alia is the one nobody planned. Paul was the product of Jessica defying her order's breeding program, but he was still a variable they were hunting for. Alia is a true wild card. Because Jessica underwent the Spice Agony while pregnant, Alia was born with her ancestors' memories already awake. The Sisterhood's word for her is Abomination. Truthers argue that anything the system couldn't predict or control may be closer to the spirit of a messiah than the man it built.

Even Paul seems unsettled by her. In the books, Alia is startlingly poised and unnervingly mature from infancy, and the Fremen treat her with a reverence that rivals what they give her brother. At times she looks less like a sidekick than a second centre of gravity.

The counterargument. Skeptics have a clean rebuttal: the title belongs to Paul. The Fremen prophecy names him, the Kwisatz Haderach is explicitly a male genetic goal, and Alia's story doesn't end in triumph. Her inherited memories become a vulnerability, and the Baron Harkonnen's presence in her mind eventually overwhelms her. A messiah who gets possessed by her family's worst enemy is a hard sell.

Alia isn't the Lisan al Gaib, but she may be the best evidence that the whole concept is broken. Her existence shows the plan was never as controlled as the Bene Gesserit believed. The messiah role, in the end, passes to neither of the twins but to Alia's nephew, Leto II, whose destiny is far stranger.
