ALL OF 25 and city designer Sharath Sundar has already had four pop-ups in the last three months, with two more coming up as well. After a soft launch of his eponymous label in June 2018 that saw just 50 designs, the designer is now back  with an extended line of 150 designs from his first collection, The Line — The Inception. From edgy pinks to a new colour he coined ‘Pirange’, his collection is all about comfy linens and edgy colours.

Dreams about Florence

“I come from a very conservative background in Chennai, and like everyone was asked to do an MBA,” says Sharath who has his own studio space in Thiruvanmiyur. “I was always passionate about clothes, but I didn’t know how it would work out. So I did my undergraduation in Loyola, and then joined (designer) Vivek Karunakaran as an intern, and had the opportunity to learn about design, production and style aesthetics from him.” Post the internship, Sharath left for National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi, where he pursued a master’s degree in design. He then moved back to Chennai and did a crash course at NIFT Chennai, where he learnt the technical know-how of the trade. “After Delhi and Chennai, I had a hankering to go abroad and get some worldly exposure in the world of fashion. And what better place for that than the fashion capital of the world — Italy!” The designer soon left for Florence, where he did a masters at Polimoda, while interning in Milan at the same time.

Clean cuts and silhouettes

It wasn’t long before the young designer started his own line and created his own designs. And it is surprising to know that it has only been eight months since he returned. The designer loved subtle colours and clothes, and linen seemed to fit the bill. Not only is the fabric premium wear, but is also cut out for casual wear.

Origami play

Sharath explains the idea behind his collection name The Line — The Inception. “Every present-day design evolved from a very basic line. We may have developed our designs into intricate paisleys and florals, but the basics always start with a line.”  The collection has a mix of asymmetrical cuts, sharp and clean cuts, tips at the hem and flares and one can find dresses, tunics and pants. “For colours, I have used bright shades like navy blue, bright reds, and pink plus orange that I call pirange (laughs).”While Sharath initially started working alone, he now has a team of about 10-12 tailors. His new collection, The Origami Perspective, much like the name suggests, will be a play on folded fabric and is slated for launch just before Christmas.
