When it comes to experimental jewellery, we cast a wide shopping net, and Debasmita Ghosh’s artisanal glass jewellery label Aadikara is exactly the kind of adventurous bling we’re on the lookout for this season. The Ahmedabad-based design studio is creating a line of some of the most gorgeous clear glass jewellery available in this country. The label which is only a couple of years old, has found a stunning connect with younger shoppers who want to go out of their comfort zone. Debasmita, who’s a NIFT graduate, tells us that she had to invest a full year just for researching the possibilities, before she could start the brand. “We were introduced to flamework glass jewellery in our classes at NIFT, and I found it very exciting; there’s so much space to experiment, and nobody’s tried to do something along these lines. And I would go to Firozabad on weekends, and I started to work with artisans there, and held some workshops. And the glass artisans are also facing a very tough competition from international brands, and I thought it would be a win-win for all of us if we could come up with something like this,” says Debasmita.

Aadikara’s brand new collection of elaborate 'Jhoomar' glass jhumkas or the elaborate Wisteria danglers, feature some of the finest craftsmanship we’ve seen in the Indian jewellery circuit; resembling mini umbrella-like chandeliers, these gold tinted glass danglers make for the most extravagant costume jewellery. “My work has always been about the seamless union of glass and metal; they should come together as part of a single piece, and not exist as separate entities. They have to tell a story together. Besides glass, we use brass which is gold-plated, and we also use silver,” Debasmita informs us. Besides chains, brooches, earrings, rings, Aadikara has also come up with a new range of floral lapel pins, and Debasmita informs us she is conceptualising something even quirkier. “We’re actually working on a more offbeat line-up featuring glass arm bands, wrist bands, bracelets which are obviously more wearable. We are also venturing into men’s jewellery with glass bow ties and other accessories,” adds the designer.

Aadikara’s collection is all about pushing the envelope and Debasmita tells us that her creations appeal to people who are looking to take risks, especially as she is trying to create a niche for something which doesn’t really have a market in the country. “Anyone who really loves to experiment and doesn’t mind the attention would love this line-up, I think. Because glass jewellery tends to grab attention wherever you wear them. My clients tell me the same thing,” Debasmita reveals. Aadikara’s floral-inspired earrings, and fantastically designed oversized gong shoulder dusters are a hit among millennial shoppers. Aadikara’s numbers are also pretty economical, and the price point starts from Rs 1,000 and goes up to Rs 10,000, and some pieces can go upto Rs 20,000. You can always place an order on Aadikara’s Facebook or Instagram page.
