If you are bored of wearing the same clothes with repetitive patterns and have a tough time finding a unique dress that stands out, then 27-year-old Aastha Chowdhary’s new boutique at Lower Rawdon Street, called Monologue, is an answer to all your woes. She designs semi-formals and smart casuals with fine detailing on the shirt sleeves and collars, long peplum or dhoti skirts, culottes and trousers, jumpsuits and shirt dresses, in a variety of colours and fabrics such as silk, crepe, muslin and linen, in styles and cuts that are contemporary yet fashionable.

“I was creatively inclined ever since I left school. When I went to London, it started with jewellery, then bags and ceramics too. The whole idea behind getting a place was to turn it into a store, with all the products that I like — bags, shoes and jewellery,” says the young couturier. “The boutique is called Monologue, because I believe the sartorial choices of a person tells a story about them,” she adds.

You will find almost everything at this store, whether it is block printed harem pants in silk or a stone beige kurta with ruffle neck detailing. From off-shoulder crop tops for regular wear to short skirts in line n with ruffles for party wear, you can team up her separate pieces with anything in your wardrobe and still make a statement. “I like the combination of sequins and glass beads, but we try to pair them differently, because fashion is also about reinventing. Smocking, pin tuck, pleating and scalloping are just some details we could work with. The possibilities are numerous,” says Aastha.

Aastha’s collection is inspired from the romantic era and she experiments with different necklines, sleeves and drapes. Whether it is bell sleeves or a variation, or bell bottoms with inside pleats (not on the waist) or a trouser which ends in cuffs — there is always some surprise element in each of her garments. The colours that she uses, ranging from mustard, blue and green silk with bandhini work, to cool shades of sea green and teal or even bright reds or beige —reflect the versatility of her ideation. A turmeric yellow dhoti skirt and matching jacket with golden embroidery in kairi design is just the right outfit for you, if you have a wedding to attend but don’t have the time or patience to wear a sari. In addition, there are chiffon dresses with fringe work detailing and a handkerchief drape for beach wear, or a jumpsuit with a belt made of glass beads — for those who love to experiment with accessories. By the time you finish exploring and discovering her clothes, you will be spoilt for choice over which one to buy.
