Hidden amidst the sleepy residential buildings of Southern Avenue is a dark mahogany door with the name Sejal Kanoi written on it in a stylish font. A lamp rests atop the nameplate. As soon as the door opens, you find yourself in an exquisitely decorated alleyway, which leads you to a room on the right, dazzling with bridal wear. As you proceed further up the flight of stairs, you will be greeted by small replicas of famous Renaissance paintings and framed mirrors of different shapes and sizes, adorning the adjacent walls. There is one particular section, where you will find different kinds of embroidery displayed with their embroidery frames intact.

“We started work on the flagship store in March 2018 and began operating out of this place by the end of 2018. The official launch is set to happen later this month,” says Sejal Kanoi, the woman behind the label, which specialises in ethnic wear and feather-light bridal wear.

Zlato by Sejal Kanoi is a diversification and a collection of Western wear in metallic colours — gold, bronze, rose gold and champagne — with embroidery on Western cuts and silhouettes. It has a very European feel to it. ‘Zlato’ is a Czech word, which means gold and also a beautiful woman. The aspiration of our store is to make women feel beautiful,” she adds.

The ruffled tunics, embellished skirts, breathe easy palazzo pants and chiffon tops will make for comfortable day-wear during the summer season too. It is interesting to note that while she chooses ‘metallic’ colours for the apparel to stand out (like teal, grey, nude champagne rose, beige, military green) she also incorporates some shades of scarlet red and bright peach, in keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme. You can also choose from the neckpieces, made with recycled fabric, as a gift for a special someone.

“We are also about to launch a special collection towards the end of February, called The Great Gatsby Look, which is also a part of the Valentine’s collection. The look follows the fashion trends of 1920s New York, and will include a lot of bling — like feathers and sequins to give a dramatic look — for a cocktail party or a girls’ night out. It is also very moderately priced, because we want the youngsters to come back to us,” says the student of Florence Design Academy.

The Valentine’s collection is priced Rs 3,000 onwards.
