Handmade, zero-waste, sustainable personal care products and lifestyle labels have been in and around in the city in plenty. While most of them operate online, there are a few who function out of stores. However, Chennaiites are always on the lookout for something new, especially when they want to get a feel of the products.

Who wouldn’t want to pick up an Orange Cinnamon Spa Bar soap from Bengaluru-brand Bare Necessities, and take in that fresh citrusy scent? Or perhaps try out handmade Bohemian chic necklaces made completely out of waste fabric like those from Calicut-based cheekily named Knotty Maria. Twenty-eight-year-old curator Rosemary Jacob’s pop-up named My Cup of Tea — All Things Curated by Rosemary Jacob will be that, and a lot more! After a stint with a Singapore-based e-commerce platform, she decided to start with a pop-up in Kochi in 2017 where she introduced 16 handcrafted brands. “For this edition, the curation is more contemporary or modern, using traditional Indian techniques of creation.” Find jewellery brands like Zariin, Dhora, Aditi Bhatt & Eesha Zaveri.

Mumbai-based OMO whose clothes you can otherwise only buy in Mumbai or Goa,  has been around for 23 years, is in the city for the first time. Started by Aarthi Shanthakumar, OMO’s operation manager Ateev Anand says that they’re all about natural fabrics and handloom textiles. “Our techniques are essentially culturally,” and the silhouettes are based on flattering the Indian figure.” With two flagship stores in Bandra and Panjim, the label will be bringing down about 60-70 pieces. Watch out for dresses that double up as kurtas and crop tops which can be used as sari blouses. Starting at `700.

Touch me ‘knot’
Speaking on behalf of his mother Mariamma Maxy and her recent brand Knotty Maria is Joseph Maxwell from Calicut. Fun and colourful, Knotty Maria’s products are all handmade from spare fabric that are mostly cottons. “She does home decor and jewellery and this is the first time she will be showcasing her products,” says Joseph.Fabric work and crotchet is Mariamma’s forte and she will be bringing about 100 pieces to the pop-up. Watch out for her combo of crotchet and stone jewellery. Starting at `400.

Mint ’n’ scrubs

A sure-fire hot seller from Bare Necessities is their organically made toothpaste. “It is made out of coconut oil which is good for your gums, baking soda which is a natural disinfectant and peppermint essential oils which gives a fresh minty feel to your mornings,” explains Sahar.  `70 and upwards.
