Cool fabrics are the basis of great summer wear and no one knows it better than designer Naushad Ali whose knowledge of textiles made his Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2018 collection quaintly called “When the Dot took a Walk” at 6Degree Studio, a ‘must have’ for the coming months.

Inspired by artist Paul Klee, there was an intelligent use of fabrics; prints and colours to make the collection a talking point at most functions. Mud resist techniques were fused along with natural dye shades that came alive on the ramp in myriad hues of natural colours.

Working with silk, bamboo cotton, crêpe and linen, Naushad remained partial to natural dyes and added interesting new shades of green, which he mingled with indigo, yellow, black, white, grey and red. The print story was varied as stripes, checks and dots worked rather well for the apparel. The result was a play of broad and narrow stripes, as well as checks interspersed by dots that seemed to take a fashionable walk through the garments as they appeared on different segments.

The silhouettes were loose and flowing, which made the collection a ‘must have’ during the steamy months ahead.

Each dress was a suspense mystery and totally unconventional in its origin. The stripes made a horizontal appearance for capes, summer coats and long tunics. Trousers were cropped and jackets were short. Skirts were a conventional midi length and draped short ponchos looked stylish on lean, long dresses.

Keeping to his favoured clean lines sans too much fuss, Naushad emphasised on layering of the separates and then brought in stylish long jackets, wrap around dresses and skirts as well as some comfy linen trousers.

Revamping the classic kaftan by experimenting with never seen before sleeves and timeless black polka dots on the cream coloured silhouette, was the cynosure of attraction. Making sure that their body art was deliciously contemporary and functionally fashionable were a range of asymmetric cuts that gave the fluid, free flowing ensembles a sensational appeal.

Nothing is more desirable for summer, than an easy to handle mix and match wardrobe, with an imaginative title “When the Dot took a Walk” which was exactly what Naushad Ali, had for the rising mercury. The collection with its unconventional creativity set the look for the coming season with its mystical yet dramatic appeal.
