Step into the inviting world of Laasya Rutland, tucked away in a charming 72-year-old art deco mid-century modern home, far from the frenetic pace of Chennai’s city streets. Opening its doors in late April, this enchanting space is more than a store — it’s a tribute to artistry, craftsmanship, and mindful living. And within its thoughtfully curated rooms, you will find an array of lifestyle brands converging, each telling its own unique story. From the reclaimed teakwood marvels of Baro Designs to the delightful creations of Mudpie Pottery Studio, White Hill Studio and Studio Covers, every piece adds its own note to the harmonious design symphony. The collection includes ceramics inspired by both the hills and the coast, seamlessly blending with the reclaimed teakwood furniture, encouraging visitors to rethink and rejuvenate their living spaces. We talk to Ashwini Navneeth, creative director, to know more.

What inspired the creation of Laasya Rutland, and how did you choose the name?

This is the creative platform of Laasya Fine Homes, a firm devoted to fine spaces. During our travels and visits to exhibitions, we noticed a burgeoning of design talent in the country, both formal and informal. We found a range of talented artisans and designers across the country making products that had the potential to elevate the daily human living experience through enhancements of spaces that we habit. This is a creative platform to showcase such work.

Can you describe the curation process for the designers and artisans featured at the store?

The curation began by bringing on board team members whose ethos resonated deeply with that of the firm’s vision. We seek out designers based on their vision, passion, creativity, and interest in a shared passion and seek an impactful footprint in the vibrant and culturally aware Chennai community. The selection is ultimately narrowed down to pieces one can enjoy every day; pieces that will de-stress us and contribute to expansive thoughts.

How does The Woodhouse Coffee & Cocoa Co complement the ethos of the store?

It is run by a passionate barista, Samyuktha, who shares our ethos. She gave up her career in consultancy after her studies in the US and decided that brewing coffee is her calling. She is personally supervising the lattes most of the time. The cosy café with alfresco option in the regal verandah conveys that this is a space to stop and think.
