RIP Issey Miyake: A life in pictures

Team Indulge

Issey Miyake was born in Hiroshima on April 22, 1938. The designer was seven years old when the US Army dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

He studied graphic designing at the Tama Art University in Tokyo. The designer also went to the fashion school, École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris.

Issey wanted to be a dancer initially, but became interested in fashion after he started borrowing fashion magazines from his sister.

Issey Miyake returned to Tokyo in the 1970s and established the Miyake Design Studio. He also designed the popular turtlenecks worn by Steve Jobs, with whom he shared a good friendship.

He began experimenting with pleats in the late 1980s. Since he had aspired to be a dancer earlier, he aimed at creating comfortable pleated clothing for the performers.

The designer left behind a rich legacy. He also received numerous awards in his lifetime, including the Kyoto prize (2006), which is the highest private award for a lifetime achievement in the arts and sciences in Japan.
