Narali Poornima is generally celebrated on the last Friday of Shravan Purnima. Maharashtra’s fishing communities offer their devotion and gratitude to the ocean with coconuts. The festival of Narali Poornima is particularly associated with the Koli people, who reside on the Konkan Coast, and is also practiced in parts of Goa, Gujarat, and Karnataka.

What is Narali Poornima and why is the sea worshipped?

Narali Poornima is the worship of Varun Dev, considered the God of Water and Oceans. Coconuts are offered to the sea by the fishermen, and they pray for calmness and success in their fishing business. The term 'Narali' is derived from the Marathi word naral, which means coconut.

The festival is associated with the monsoon season. Fishermen usually anchor their ships in the turbulent waters of the monsoon. As the season starts subsiding, the Shravan Purnima festival signals that it is time to resume sea voyages. The coconut offering takes on the meaning of thanksgiving and a wish for a safe journey.

When is Narali Poornima in 2026?

The festival of Narali Poornima will fall on Friday, August 28, 2026. The tithi of Purnima is from 9:08 am on August 27 till 9:48 am on August 28 as per the referenced Panchang calculation. Narali Poornima is centred on the worship of Varun Dev, regarded as the god of water and oceans

Why is coconut offered to the sea?

Coconut forms the essence of this ceremony. It may be wrapped in red clothes or adorned with flowers before taking it to the beach. The coconut's innocence makes it an appropriate sacrifice to God, while the act of offering it to the sea reflects their appreciation and the urge for their safety. Decorated boats, flowers, music, and folk dances form part of this celebration.

How is Narali Poornima puja performed?

Components of a conventional puja thali could be a new coconut, turmeric, kumkum, marigold and jasmine flowers, an oil lamp, betel leaves, and areca nut. Another alternative is to prepare a purna kalasha which contains water along with mango leaves and coconut.

Maharashtrian delicacies form another key part of the day. Family members cook coconut rice (known as Narali Bhat), along with other coconut-based sweets, to be served as prasad.

Food is another important part of the day

The Brahmins of Maharashtra who perform Shravani Upakarma can undertake phalahar, which is fruit fasting. The practice entails consumption of coconut as the sole food in the fasting period. Other practices include planting of trees to show gratitude to nature.

The Worli Koliwada, Versova Koliwada and Colaba Koliwada of Mumbai are some of the major Koli communities linked to this event. Kolis hold the festival on the banks of the sea. Another place that is significant to the Kolis is the Ekvira Devi Temple located at Karla Caves near Lonavala because Ekvira Devi is their kuladevi (family goddess).
