Hyderabad-based designer Anushree Reddy has decided to go back to classics for her Spring/Summer 2019 bridal collection. “Why not go back to intricate floral lattice jaalis for this season, I thought,” shares the self-taught designer. Called Atirah, this collection is an ode to the dying art of making ittar. “The sweet smelling fragrances, which was once cherished by the Nizams were laboriously made. Nowadays, people rarely buy them thanks to the surge of fast brand-owned fragrances,” says the city-based designer. Similar to that, her design process also involved a lot of trial and error, with artisans at her Banjara Hills studio for months. The collection will be available at her studio this week onwards. The London School of Economics graduate claims that the collection is for the brides who prefer classic cuts. “If she looks back at her photo after ten years, her wedding outfit must not look dated,” says Anushree. The silhouettes are fairly traditional with three-piece outfits — the lehenga, blouse and dupatta. However, there are a few aberrations as some of the ensembles feature plunging V-shaped necklines and ruffles.
Anushree always goes back to the technique of zardosi for trousseaus and this collection is no exception! “I always go back to zardosi as that’s my tribute to the Nizami heritage of this city,” shares the designer. She has used fabrics like pure silks, cotton and organza, in shades like frosted almond (sang raza), apricot (zar) and celestial blue (fiza). The collection also features gowns and menswear with ruffles and layering.
Talking about her experience at Lakmé Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019, Anushree recalls that Atirah received a lot of positive feedback and that she was thrilled that her muse, Kangana Ranaut was the showstopper! “There is no one else I can think of, who has the kind of grace Kangana does, which made her the perfect showstopper,” says the celebrity designer who has also dressed the likes of Katrina Kaif, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kareena Kapoor in recent times. Kangana’s warm pink delicately embroidered rose lehenga with floral jaali work took 11 pairs of hands and 395 hours to complete, says Anushree looking back at one of her most well-received collections till date.
