This collection celebrates cricket's heritage with a cool retro twist

Motherland has launched Motherland Cricket. Inspired by the elegance and camaraderie of the classic sport, this collection is an ode to cricketing heritage, meticulously designed to serve as a reminder of the values it represents — teamwork, discipline, and fair play.

It is a celebration of the elegance and style of the sport’s heritage; a nod to the retro cool of the ’70s golden era, while also embodying the spirit of contemporary global street wear. It’s the rebirth of dashing, old school classicism in brand new cuts and materials. V Sunil, co-founder, Motherland, gives us a sneak-peek into the collection.

What aspects of traditional cricket attire inspired the designs?

The idea for the collection is heavily rooted in Test cricket DNA and design cues. Motherland Cricket will give Indian and international buyers the badge identity. A tribute to the meritocratic spirit of cricket, this collection is about creating products with style, energy, and character at accessible prices, a philosophy that we call ‘sportocracy’. This inclusive line offers highly original and affordable luxury to all followers of fashion and sports, reminding us of the old school heart of cricket even as IPL 2024 is in full swing.

How does the outfits in this collection capture the spirit and elegance of cricket’s golden era?

The inspiration is from the ’70s through ’90s when Test cricket had great style and was super strong. The entire collection looks like a protest symbol, but a spin ball connects to contemporary street fashion and culture. It comprises polos, sweat shirts, pullovers, and a cap. A few more are on the way.

Could you elaborate on specific design elements or motifs used?

The style and cut of the sweater and the off-white colour are inspired by the 70s. Most importantly, our symbology, cricket ball stitch and double-colour polo really stand out from the regular sports brands.

Are there any recurring colours, patterns, or fabrics that are significant to this collection?

The royal colour combination of off-white, navy, and maroon has been used in the collection, which itself has a timeless elegance and can be worn on any occasion. Also, we have added some new elements like the cricket ball stitch on the sleeves to give it a more urban fashion vibe.
