7 Indian nut milk brands for the newly-turned vegan

If you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, this list might be moo-sic to your ears. Ahead of World Milk Day (June 1), we bring you a curated list of dairy-free alternatives that are ‘nut’ just the usual. From pistachio milk to peanut butterrmilk to flavour-infused options with cacao and coffee, we have your doodh dilemmas well and truly — sorted.

Pistachio for your thoughts?
Chennai

Pistachio milk is certainly a first for us. And nutritionist Manjula Vasudevan (37) who runs the two-year-old Snack Matters pulls it off with elan. Our second choice that is also not common on nut milk menus is the walnut option. By subscription. INR 165 for a 250 ml bottle.

Thandai will always love you
Chembur, Mumbai

Pardita Mascarenhas (41) introduced Thandai-flavoured almond milk as a festive special around Holi. But her clients wouldn’t let her take it off the menu, so now it is available year round. Also look out for her other hotsellers which include cardamom, cinnamon and date. Incidentally, her company is called Break of Dawn because she wakes up at 4 am, to have her nut milks fresh and ready to go for a 7.30 am delivery. By subscription. INR 160 for 300 ml. INR 200 just for the thandai option.

Bean up all night
All metros

You might have already spotted Raw Pressery’s Cacao and Coffee almond milk tetrapacks in stores. The latter is made from freeze dried Arabica brought all the way from Ghana! Look out for a date-flavoured almond milk next. In stores and by subscription. INR 300 per litre. INR 100 for a 200 ml bottle.

Just mango-ficient
Chennai

Alphonso in your almond milk? Jus Pure run by Shranoth Suresh (30) has a seasonal mango special on offer which is absolutely delicious. Look out for these other all-natural fruity flavours including banana, sappota and strawberry. Also available as a rolled oats concoction for those seeking a ready breakfast. Can be ordered online and by subscription. INR 195 for a 330 ml bottle.

Peanut colada
Bengaluru

Anushree Kamath wants you to beat the heat and get a little bit of a protein boost as you do it. And her chilled peanut buttermilk that are available in flavours like kokum, curry leaf, coriander as well as a mint and ginger are certainly changing the game. Her two-year-old company, The Happy Calf uses a probiotics culture sourced from Malaysia to create it and we’re told that the making process from start to finish is roughly 15 hours long. INR 100 for 300 ml.

Soy good
Navi Mumbai

Cowvathi which started two years ago by animal activist Shasvathi Siva (27) promises unsweetened nut milk basics like almond, cashew and soy. Despite no delivery option, her products clearly have folks smitten as regulars drop by every evening to pick up their order for a morning chai fix the next day.
INR 90 for 500 ml.

Cashew later
Bengaluru

You would expect a vegan brand named Goodmylk to stock every kind of dairy alternative. But this company helmed by 22-year-old Abhay Rangan has just one: a cashew-oat blend.  The reason? Rangan told us that the aim was to find an alternative that was as close as possible to its dairy counterpart. And three years of R&D in — with experiments across almond, coconut and peanut — this is it, he tells us.
By subscription and in stores. INR 120 per litre.
